Hong Kong Baptist University wins the CFA Institute Asia-Pacific Regional Investment Research Challenge
Team advances to the Global Investment Research Challenge in New York
Hong Kong, April 14, 2008, – Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) wins the CFA Institute Asia-Pacific Regional Investment Research Challenge in Hong Kong and advances to the second annual Global Investment Research Challenge to be held in New York on 1 May 2008.
The Challenge is an educational initiative whereby students, guided by industry professionals, produce research reports on a publicly traded company. This year, more than 300 students from 80 universities worldwide are participating in local and regional challenges. HKBU won the local challenge last November to advance to the Asia-Pacific Challenge, which joins other regional competitions being held this month in London and New York to determine the teams that will compete in this year’s Global Challenge final.
University teams from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, and Singapore participated at the Asia-Pacific Challenge held on 12 April 2008 in Hong Kong. Singapore Management University and Indonesia’s IPMI Business School were the first and second runners-up at the competition. The two other participating teams were India’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies and the Mainland China’s Shanghai Jiatong University.
“Of course we heartily congratulate the HKBU team on its fine achievement, but in fact all the students participating in the Challenge are winners – they are learning best practices in equity research through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills, they are networking with each other and with practicing professionals, and they are experiencing first hand the value of teamwork, focus, and disciplined and ethical process,” said Jan R. Squires, CFA, managing director, Asia Pacific Operations of CFA Institute.
The HKBU team presented its winning equity research report on China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited to a panel of experts that included:
- Ms. Elizabeth Y.S. Soon, CFA, partner, HSZ (Hong Kong) Limited
- Mr. Benoit Descourtieux, CFA, principal, Calypso Capital Limited
- Mr. Song Shen, managing director, equity analyst – Commodities, Goldman Sachs (Asia) L.L.C.
- Mr. Stuart Winchester, CFA, senior portfolio manager, Allianz Global Investors
