Ground transportation from the airport

  • Airport city bus

An intercity bus service operates from the airport. Buses leave for Colombo every 30 minutes.

  • Taxi
The fastest and most convenient mode of transportation to the city is an airport taxi. The airport taxi service has a fleet of over 600 vehicles. The taxi counter is at the arrival lobby. The taxi service can be contacted at +94 (112) 252-861 ext: 3097.

Getting Around the City

Three Wheelers (Tuk-Tuks)

Sri Lanka is famous for their tuk-tuks.  These are 3 wheelers, mostly of Indian origin. However, be sure to haggle with the driver to agree on a price before getting in. These drivers are notorious for taking foreigners "for a ride" by demanding for high amounts. Ask your hotel for "going rates" for destinations from your hotel.

Public Transportation

Colombo has a fleet of private and public buses. These are a cheaper mode of transportation. However, they can be highly congested during rush hour traffic.

Taxi

Taxis in Sri Lanka cannot be hailed on the road. They have to be called and ordered in advance. Use the list of cab companies and numbers below:

GNTC

Ace Cabs
Kangaroo Cabs

(011) 237-7677

Call at least 30 minutes prior to your planned departure time. All major hotels operate a fleet of their own taxis. However, they are more expensive than the ones listed above.

View interactive area map

On your exam day, Sunday, it would be advisable to take a cab to the exam center. The centers for Level I and Level II are less than 2 kms apart. The Level III test center (BMICH) is about 6 kms away from the city center. The traffic on a typical Sunday morning is relatively less hectic. Approximate time from city to BMICH (on Sunday morning) is about 15 minutes.

There are a number of hotels close to the test centers. CFA exam candidates are eligible for special rates (PDF)

Tips in selecting accommodation:

  • Try to stay close to the exam center
  • Preferably try staying in the hotel where you are taking the exam – that could avoid the hassle of selecting transportation from the hotel to the exam center and the costs involved.
