Based on an applicant's qualifications, CFA Institute assigns one of three types of membership:

Tips for applying for membership
Do allow several weeks for your application to be reviewed and approved for membership
Don't rely on your job title as a substitute for describing your job duties

Affiliate membership requirements include:
- Two qualified sponsors
- Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement and Professional Conduct Statement
- Meet CFA society requirements, which vary by society (find a society)
Regular membership (required to receive your charter) requirements include, but are not limited to:
- 48 months of acceptable professional work experience
- passing the Level I exam or the Standards of Practice Examination
CFA charterholder membership requirements include, but are not limited to:
- 48 months of acceptable professional work experience
- passing the Level I, Level II, and Level III exams
