CFA Program Materials Copyright Permission Policy
Permission to use CFA Program materials must be requested in writing and, if granted, must be renewed annually. Only providers participating in the Prep Provider Guidelines Program, CFA Program Partners, and degree-granting academic institutions are eligible to receive permission to use Learning Outcome Statements (LOS) and sample exam questions. If you are not a prep provider and are requesting permission to use copyrighted CFA Program materials, please contact prepproviders@cfainstitute.org for further details on policy and pricing.
Permission is for a one-time use only and valid only for the stated curricular year. Requests are reviewed on an individual basis; therefore, it is helpful to provide as much information on the use of the materials as possible. Please use the provider copyright permission request form (PDF) to capture a detailed description of materials to be used.
This policy covers curricular years 2008 and 2009. All pricing and specifications are subject to change. If you have questions about these policies, contact the Prep Provider Guidelines Program at prepproviders@cfainstitute.org.
Learning Outcome Statements
Copyright permission can be requested for Learning Outcome Statements (LOS). The fee for use of LOS is US$1 per reprint (per level, per year) with a minimum fee of US$100 per product. When granted, permission allows exact reproduction of any level of LOS in electronic and/or print products:
- Photocopying (reprint = # of photocopies)
- Posting on a password-protected website (reprint = # of users who have access to the site)
- Republishing on CD-ROM, floppy disk or PowerPoint (reprint = # of units produced)
- Republishing in a book, on flash cards, or other forms of print media (reprint = # of units produced)
Each product is considered a separate use and incurs a separate fee.
Example: A business wants to republish the Level I LOS on its website, on a CD-ROM, and in its study guide book. The website will have a maximum of 300 users for the year, the print run on the CD-ROM is 700, and the book distribution is 600. The total copyright permission cost for the 2008 Level I LOS is US$1,600.
Sample Questions
The copyright fee is determined by question type:
- Multiple choice: US$50 per sample question and answer (per-product flat fee)
- Item set: US$100 per sample question set and answer, per level (per-product flat fee)
- Essay: US$100 per sample question and guideline answer (per-product flat fee)
Copyright fees will be assessed if questions and answers are used in any way, including, but not limited to:
- Photocopying
- Posting on a password-protected website
- Republishing on CD-ROM, floppy disk, or PowerPoint
- Republishing in a book, on flash cards, or other forms of print media
Each product is considered a separate use and incurs a separate fee.
Example: If CFA exam questions are placed on a CD-ROM and used on flash cards, this is considered two separate uses, and the fees will be calculated accordingly.
Curriculum Readings
If you want to request permission to reproduce a reading from the CFA Program curriculum, the reading must have been originally published by CFA Institute. If the article was originally published elsewhere, permission needs to be sought from the copyright holder, who is identified in a copyright statement usually located on the first page of the reprinted article. In most cases, copyright permissions for reproducing readings from the CFA Program curriculum should be directed to John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Other Materials
Requests for other CFA Institute materials will be reviewed on an individual basis.
