CIPM Curriculum Development

The CIPM exams and supporting curriculum are grounded in the practice of the investment performance profession.

In 2008, CFA Institute and the CIPM Association conducted a practice (job) analysis (PDF) in the field of performance evaluation and presentation. (Similar analysis was conducted in 2005.) This analysis is essential to maintaining the relevance and reputation of the CIPM program because it aligns the curriculum and exams with the responsibilities of investment performance practitioners.

The CIPM Association Advisory Council relies on these survey results to adjust the emphasis on each major topic area of the CIPM exams and restructure the supporting curriculum accordingly. Learn more about changes to the CIPM curriculum

CIPM Exam Guideline Topic Area Weights
Major Topic Area Principles Level Expert Level
Ethical and Professional Standards 15% 15%
Performance Evaluation 45% 50%
The Global Investment Performance Standards 40% 35%
Total 100% 100%

The number of exam questions in a given topic area does not necessarily match these topic weights. Exam questions may draw upon a breadth of knowledge and a variety of skills. However, the guideline weights are a generally valid indicator of the emphasis given to each topic area in the exam.
