Learning Outcome Statements

Learning outcome statements (LOS) are study session- and/or reading-specific objectives. They help a candidate determine the knowledge that should be gained from each reading. Examples of LOS include the following:

  • Identify the properties of a valid benchmark
  • Calculate a portfolio’s estimated time-weighted rate of return using the modified Dietz formula
  • Evaluate the relative merits of high/low, interquartile range, and standard deviation as measures of the dispersion of portfolio returns within a composite

The LOS are designed to enhance your learning and focus your study. The LOS link the CIPM body of knowledge to the curriculum and the CIPM exams. The LOS guide the question writers as well as the candidates. Each exam question is based explicitly on one or more LOS.

Bloom’s Taxonomy provides a framework for the LOS.

A glossary of command words will help you understand the structure of the LOS.
