Preparing for a CIPM Exam
Study the Curriculum
Candidates should be able to succeed on the CIPM exams by studying the curriculum and mastering the learning outcome statements (LOS).
Through a collaborative arrangement with VitalSource™ and John Wiley & Sons, CFA Institute offers the CIPM program curriculum in a digital format that you can access online, download to your PC, and download to two mobile devices. You can also purchase an optional print version. You will have immediate access to your CIPM curriculum eBook once your exam registration payment has been processed. Create a Study Schedule
- Dedicate a consistent block of time every week to reading and studying.
- Complete all reading assignments and the associated problems and solutions in each study session.
- Review the learning outcome statements both before and after you study each reading to ensure that you have mastered the applicable content.
- Review the topic level learning outcome after you complete a topic area and verify that you have mastered the objectives.
In a post-exam survey conducted in March/April 2009, CIPM candidates self-reported the number of hours they spent preparing for the exam.
- Principles level exam − candidates spent an average of 95 hours preparing
- Expert level exam − candidates spent an average of 107 hours preparing
Individual candidates should only use this as a guideline; you may need more time to appropriately prepare for an exam.
Historically, pass rates for the CIPM exams have been 56 percent at the Principles level and 50 percent at the Expert level.
