Robert C. Merton is the Resident Scientist at Dimensional Fund Advisors and is the School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Previously, he served as University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University and as George Fisher Baker Jr. Professor of Business Administration and the John and Natty McArthur University Professor at Harvard Business School. Professor Merton co-founded Long-Term Capital Management. He is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his research developing a new method to determine the value of derivatives. Professor Merton is a past president of the American Finance Association, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is the author of Continuous-Time Finance and a co-author of Cases in Financial Engineering: Applied Studies of Financial Innovation; The Global Financial System: A Functional Perspective; Finance; and Financial Economics. Professor Merton has also received the Nicholas Molodovsky Award from CFA Institute. He holds a BS in engineering mathematics from Columbia University, an MS in applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology, and a PhD in economics from MIT.
