Speaker Profiles

 

Tony Arrell

Tony Arrell is CEO and a founder of Burgundy Asset Management Ltd., a discretionary investment management firm focused on value. Previously, he was chairman and CEO of Midland Walwyn Inc., director of research and also CEO of Wood Gundy, and an analyst with Gardiner Watson Limited. Mr. Arrell is chairman of the board of the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation and chairman of its pension committee, as well as a trustee of the University of Guelph and chairman of its investment management committee. He holds a BSc degree from the University of Guelph and an MBA from the Schulich School at York University.

Brigid Barnett, CFA, is responsible investing manager at the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), where she is responsible for implementing the investment board’s corporate engagement program, including such approaches as proxy voting, working through coalitions, and direct engagement. Previously, she worked as a senior research analyst at Innovest, as a money market trader at TD Asset Management, and as a fixed-income research analyst at TD Securities. Ms. Barnett received a BA in economics from Queen's University and an MSc from the London School of Economics.

Thomas P.M. Barnett

Thomas P. M. Barnett is currently the senior managing director of Enterra Solutions, a visiting scholar at the University of Tennessee’s Howard Baker Center, and contributing editor to www.esquire.com. He formerly served as senior strategic researcher at the Naval War College and as assistant for strategic futures Office of Force Transformation in the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD). Dr. Barnett regularly advises the OSD, Special Operations Command, and the Joint Forces Command, and routinely offers briefings to Congress and the intelligence community. He is also the author of The Pentagon’s New Map and Blueprint for Action. Dr. Barnett holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and AM and PhD degrees from Harvard University.

David R. Beatty, CFA

David Ross Beatty, CFA, is Conway Director of the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics & Board Effectiveness and professor of strategic management at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. He is also managing director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. Previously, Mr. Beatty was founding chairman of Orogen Minerals Limited and chairman and CEO of Old Canada Investment Corporation. He was also president of Weston Foods and Gardiner Group Capital. Mr. Beatty has served on the boards of 30 companies and was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire. He holds a BA in political science and economics from Trinity College and an MA in economics from Queens’ College Cambridge.

Thomas J. Boczar, CFA

Thomas J. Boczar, CFA, is director of marketing/financial institutions at Twenty-First Securities Corporation, where he markets and structures risk management and hedging strategies to professional investors. Previously, he practiced law, specializing in finance, at Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander and Ferdon and at Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Mr. Boczar has authored articles on single stock concentration risk management and other applications of financial instruments, and has received the Investment Management Consultants Association’s Stephen J. Kessler Writing Award three times. He currently serves as a member of the board and as treasurer of NYSSA. Mr. Boczar holds a BS in finance, a master’s degree in professional accounting, an MBA, a Juris Doctor and an LLM in Taxation.

Bob L. Boldt, CFA

Bob L. Boldt, CFA, is a partner of Perella Weinberg Partners and is chief investment officer of Perella Weinberg Partners’ Agility products. Previously, he was president, chief executive officer, and chief investment officer of UTIMCO, and a senior investment officer at CalPERS. Mr. Boldt was the recipient of the Graham and Dodd Award from the Financial Analysts Foundation. He holds a BS in engineering and an MBA in finance from the University of Texas. 

Jeff Brown, CFA

Jeff Brown, CFA, is co-founder and principal, US equities of Highstreet Asset Management, a disciplined quantitative firm providing private client, institutional, and subadvisory services. He has led his firm’s initiative to compile a comprehensive study of the world’s best investment management practices, and works to improve the execution of quantitative investment processes for equity portfolio management. Mr. Brown is a board member of the London International Airport Authority. He holds a business administration degree from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business.

Kristin J. Ceva, CFA

Kristin J. Ceva, CFA, is a principal and a senior portfolio strategist in the global bond group at Payden & Rygel. Previously, she worked with a number of international policy institutes, including the Pacific Council on International Policy, the Center for U.S.–Mexican Studies, and the North America Forum at Stanford University. Dr. Ceva also served as an analyst at Deloitte & Touche. She has completed extensive economic and political research on emerging markets. Dr. Ceva holds a BBA in finance from Texas A&M University and a PhD in political science from Stanford University.

Matt Christensen

Matt Christensen is executive director of the European Social Responsible Investment Forum (EUROSIF) and speaks at international events on sustainable investment matters that range from publicly listed markets to private equity. He is also a member of the European Commission Coordination Committee to explore the evolution of sustainability in the European Union. Mr. Christensen was formerly a European Director at The Motley Fool, and advised clients as a strategy consultant with Braxton Associates. He holds an MBA in entrepreneurial management from Wharton and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephen Cooper is managing director and head of valuation and accounting research at UBS Investment Bank and part-time member of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). He is also a member of the UBS Investment Research global investment recommendations committee. Previously, Mr. Cooper was a member of IASB’s Analyst Representative Group and Financial Statement Presentation Working Group. He has been repeatedly voted top European Valuation and Accounting analyst by Extel and Institutional Investor magazine. Mr. Cooper holds a masters’ degree in finance from the London School of Economics.

Anthony Cope, CFA

Anthony T. Cope, CFA, is a member of the Corporate Disclosure Policy Council and the Editorial Board of the CFA Digest. Previously, he was an inaugural member of the International Accounting Standards Board, a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and partner and director of fixed-income credit research at Wellington Management Company. Mr. Cope has served as member or chair of various CFA Institute committees and has received the Distinguished Service Award from CFA Institute. He holds a master’s degree from Cambridge University.

Marc Fox

Marc Fox is part of the GS SUSTAIN research team, where he focuses on global investment themes including macro trends, environmental sustainability, corporate governance and integration with valuation. Previously, he held media and technology positions in New York. Mr. Fox holds a BA in history from the University of Maryland and an MBA from the University of Cambridge.

William Fung

William Fung is a visiting research professor of finance at the BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre at the London Business School.  Previously, he worked at Lehman Brothers and Bankers Trust and taught finance in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1991, Professor Fung co-founded a hedge fund and in 1994, a consulting firm specializing in the risk management of hedge fund portfolios. He is chairman of the board of directors of Maple Financial Group. Professor Fung holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of London and a PhD in finance from the University of Manchester.

Niall J. Gannon Niall J. Gannon is director of wealth management and senior portfolio management director of the Gannon Group at Smith Barney, where he advises private investor families and serves on the proxy voting committee for the Portfolio Management Group. Mr. Gannon has been recognized as one of the nation’s top 100 financial advisers by Registered Rep., Barron’s, and “The Winner’s Circle” by R.J. Shook. He is a recipient of the Silver Congressional Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Mr. Gannon is a graduate of The Citadel.
Henry Groppe

Henry Groppe is the founder of Groppe, Long & Littell, an energy consulting firm. Previously, he held management, economic, and technical positions at companies including Dow Chemical, Monsanto, Texaco, and Arabian American Oil Company. Mr. Groppe is a founder of Southwest Chemical and Plastics, Mitchell Group Energy Investment Management, Space Industries International, and Research Applications, and he is founder and former chairman of Antara Resources. He was also co-organizer and first national chairman of the Petrochemical Energy Group and a director of the United States Energy Association. Mr. Groppe is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a member and former chairman of the University of Texas Engineering Foundation Advisory Council, and founder of the University of Texas Chemical Engineering Alumni Association. He is a graduate of the University of Texas College of Engineering.

Blake R. Grossman Blake R. Grossman is CEO of Barclays Global Investors (BGI). Previously, he was global chief investment officer with responsibility for BGI’s Advanced Active Strategies Group, focusing on systematic active, enhanced, and hedge fund strategies globally. He is a member of BGI’s Executive Committee and a board member of Barclays Global Investors UK Holdings Limited. Mr. Grossman’s research on the investment implications of divestment decisions, co-authored with William F. Sharpe, received a Graham and Dodd Award from the Financial Analysts Journal. He holds BA and MA degrees in economics from Stanford University.

Robert H. Herz

Robert H. Herz is chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board and a trustee of the Henry H. Kessler Foundation. Previously, he was a senior partner and North America theater leader of Professional, Technical, Risk & Quality with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Herz also served as President of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation and headed Coopers & Lybrand’s corporate finance practice, as well as served as audit partner on clients including AT&T, Dun & Bradstreet, Goldman Sachs, Shearson Lehman Bros, and Volvo. He has co-authored The Value Reporting Revolution: Moving Beyond the Earnings Game. Mr. Herz holds a BA in economics from the University of Manchester.

Laurance R. Hoagland, Jr.

Laurance R. Hoagland, Jr., CFA, is vice president and chief investment officer of the Hewlett Foundation. Previously, he served as president and chief executive officer of Stanford Management Company, and co-founder and partner in the investment management firm of Anderson, Hoagland and Company. Mr. Hoagland is chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and currently serves on the board of the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He received an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard.

Michael Jantzi

Michael Jantzi is president and founder of Jantzi Research. Previously, he was director of Canada’s Social Investment Organization. Mr. Jantzi serves as a board director of KLD Research & Analytics and sits on the Advisory Circle of the TIDES Canada Foundation. He is the co-author of The 50 Best Ethical Stocks for Canadians: High Value Investing. Mr. Jantzi was also the recipient of an Ethics in Action Award in recognition of his contribution to corporate social responsibility and social investment in Canada. He holds degrees from the University of Western Ontario and Dalhousie University.

Steven D. Levitt

Steven D. Levitt is the Alvin H. Baum Professor in Economics and director of the Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory at the University of Chicago. He is also editor of the Journal of Political Economy. Professor Levitt is coauthor of Freakonomics and has written numerous published research articles. He received the 2003 John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association for his pioneering and influential work on natural experiments in economics. In 2006, he was named to Time magazine's list of “100 People Who Shape Our World.” Professor Levitt holds a BA from Harvard University and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Robert B. Litterman

Robert B. Litterman is a managing director at Goldman Sachs and Company, where he oversees the Quantitative Investment Strategies and Global Investment Strategies groups in Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Previously, he was head of the firmwide risk department and served as co-director in the fixed-income division’s research department. Before joining the firm, Dr. Litterman was an assistant vice president in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and an assistant professor in the economics department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the co-developer, along with the late Fischer Black, of the Black–Litterman Global Asset Allocation Model. Dr. Litterman holds a BS in human biology from Stanford University and a PhD in economics from the University of Minnesota.

Michael P. Lustig

Michael P. Lustig is a managing director and portfolio manager at BlackRock, Inc., where he is responsible for managing taxable closed-end funds, the structured mortgage and derivative products sector, the markets-based risk advisory effort, and the internal training program. He also provides lectures on fixed-income derivatives at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining BlackRock, Mr. Lustig was a portfolio manager at Kleinwort Benson Investment Management (now Dresdner) and an associate in the Financial Strategies and Investment Analysis Division of Security Pacific Merchant Bank (now Bank of America Capital Markets). He earned a BA in computer science and art history from Columbia University.

Burton G. Malkiel

Burton G. Malkiel is the Chemical Bank Chairman’s Professor of Economics at Princeton University and author of the widely read investment book A Random Walk Down Wall Street. Previously, he was the William S. Beinecke Professor of Management Studies and dean of the Yale School of Management. Professor Malkiel is the author or co-editor of eight other books, including The Random Walk Guide to Investing: 10 Rules for Financial Success and Global Bargain Hunting: An Investor’s Guide to Profits in Emerging Markets, with J.P. Mei. He is a past appointee to the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and serves or has served on the boards of several financial corporations, including Prudential Financial and the Vanguard Group. Professor Malkiel holds a BA and an MBA from Harvard University and a PhD from Princeton University.

Robert Mundell Robert Mundell is a professor of economics at Columbia University. Previously, he taught at Stanford University and the University of Chicago and served as editor of the Journal of Political Economy. Professor Mundell’s books include The International Monetary System: Conflict and Reform and Monetary Theory: Interest, Inflation and Growth in the World Economy. He has been an adviser to the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, and the U.S. Treasury. Professor Mundell is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received the Jacques Rueff Medal and Prize in the French Senate and the Nobel Prize in Economics. He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Hilda M. Ochoa-Brillembourg, CFA

Hilda Ochoa-Brillembourg, CFA, is the founding president and CEO of Strategic Investment Group. She also currently serves on the board of directors for several companies including General Mills and McGraw-Hill. Previously, Ms. Ochoa-Brillembourg was Chief Investment Officer of the World Bank. Her articles have been published in Financial Analyst Journal and Pensions & Investments, and she has been named one of the “Top 50 Smartest Women in Business” by Money magazine, and one of the “Power 30 in Business” by Smart Money. Ms. Ochoa-Brillembourg is also a Fulbright Fellow, and has been awarded the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal. She holds a BS from Universidad Andres Bello, and an MPA from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Tad Rivelle

Tad Rivelle is a founding partner and the chief investment officer of Metropolitan West Asset Management, where he develops the firm's long-term economic outlook by setting strategies for fixed-income portfolios. Previously, he was co-director of fixed income at Hotchkis and Wiley and vice president at Pacific Investment Management Company. Mr. Rivelle was recognized along with his investment team as Morningstar's 2005 Fixed-Income Manager of the Year. He holds a BA in physics from Yale University, a master's degree in applied mathematics from University of Southern California, and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Jeffrey D. Sachs

Jeffrey D. Sachs is director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and special adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Previously, he taught at Harvard University. Professor Sachs is the author of The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time and Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet. He has researched the full range of issues related to global economic development, with a special focus on global health issues. He and his work have been acknowledged by Time, New York Times Magazine, and Le Nouvel Observateur. Professor Sachs holds BA, MA, and PhD degrees from Harvard University.

Lawrence S. Speidell, CFA

Lawrence S. Speidell, CFA, is founding partner and chief investment officer of Frontier Market Asset Management, sponsor of the Frontier Market Select Fund. Previously, he was executive vice president at Laffer Associates, and partner and director of global research and management at Nicholas Applegate. As a trustee at Batterymarch Financial Management, Mr. Speidell was responsible for one of the first equity funds in China. He has also served as president of the Boston Securities Analysts Society and director of the Investor Responsibility Research Center. He holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard University.

Meir Statman

Meir Statman is Glenn Klimek Professor of Finance at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. His widely published research focuses on behavioral finance and has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Research Foundation of CFA Institute, and Dean Witter Foundation. Professor Statman is a member of the Editorial Board of the Financial Analysts Journal, which twice awarded him with the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence. He holds a BA and an MBA from Hebrew University and a PhD from Columbia University.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Nassim Nicholas Taleb is currently visiting professor at London Business School. Formerly, he was dean's professor in the sciences of uncertainty at University of Massachusetts. Professor Taleb also taught derivatives modeling and model errors at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He is the author of Dynamic Hedging, Fooled by Randomness, and The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. Professor Taleb was also named as one of the "Power 30 in Business" by SmartMoney.He holds an MBA from Wharton and a PhD in management science from the University of Paris.

Donald B. Trone

Donald B. Trone is director of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Institute for Leadership and president of the Foundation for Fiduciary Studies. Previously, he was the founder and chief executive officer of Fiduciary360. Mr. Trone is co-author of Procedural Prudence and The Management of Investment Decisions. He is the recipient of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Medal of Achievement. Mr. Trone holds a master’s degree in financial services from the American College.

Mark D. Wiseman

Mark D. Wiseman is senior vice president at Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and directs the team managing private investment activities at CPP’s Investment Board. Previously, he was responsible for the co-investment program and private equity fund at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, and was an officer with Harrowston Inc. Mr. Wiseman is a board member of SmartRisk, serves on the Business Development Board of Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, and is on the advisory board of the Capital Markets Institute at the University of Toronto. Mr. Wiseman holds a BA from Queen’s University and an MBA and a law degree from the University of Toronto, in addition to a master’s degree in law from Yale University.

Justin Wolfers

Justin Wolfers is an assistant professor of business and public policy at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau for Economic Research and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Previously, Professor Wolfers served as an assistant professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He was named a Fulbright Scholar, a fellow at the MacArthur Network on Inequality and Social Interactions, and a doctoral fellow at the Weiner Center for Social Policy. Professor Wolfers is the author of numerous articles that have appeared in academic journals. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Sydney and an AM and a PhD in economics from Harvard University.

Arnold S. Wood

Arnold S. Wood is a founding partner, president, and CEO of Martingale Asset Management, LP. Previously, he was an owner trustee and senior vice president at Batterymarch Financial Management, where he was a global investment strategist and portfolio manager. Mr. Wood was a governor of CFA Institute, a chairman of the Financial Analysts Federation, and a founding member and president of the CFA Institute International Society of Security Analysts. He is a recipient of the CFA Institute Daniel J. Forrestal III Leadership Award and Leadership in Global Investing Award. Mr. Wood is a graduate of Trinity College and attended the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.

Janet L. Yellen Janet L. Yellen is president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. Previously, she taught at Harvard University and the London School of Economics and served as an economist with the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors. Dr. Yellen is a member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. She has received the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University. Dr. Yellen holds a BA in economics from Brown University and a PhD in economics from Yale University.

Vadim Zlotnikov

Vadim Zlotnikov is chief investment officer of growth equities and head of growth portfolio analytics at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., LLC (a unit of AllianceBernstein), where he oversees the development and implementation of quantitative tools. Previously, he served as chief investment strategist at Sanford C. Bernstein and also held positions at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. and Amoco Technology Company. Mr. Zlotnikov was named to the Institutional Investor All-America Research Team in the semiconductor components, strategy, and quantitative research categories. He holds a BS and an MS in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Stanford University.

Jason Zweig

Jason Zweig is a senior writer at Money magazine and has been a guest columnist for Time and CNN.com. Previously, he served as the mutual funds editor at Forbes. Mr. Zweig’s new book on the neuroscience of financial decision making, Your Money and Your Brain, was published in September 2007. He is also editor of the revised edition of Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor. A frequent commentator on radio and television, Mr. Zweig is the 2006 recipient of the lifetime achievement award for investor education from the Mutual Fund Education Alliance. He holds a BA from Columbia College.
