Guide for Use of CFA Institute Marks

CFA Institute does not usually object to proper use of its marks (apart from its logos) to refer specifically to CFA Institute entities, functions, products, or services — “referential use” under the law. This page is intended to be a basic, practical guide concerning referential use of CFA Institute marks. This is not legal advice, nor is adherence to these guidelines a guarantee of legality. Intellectual property laws vary from country to country and use to use. What is a proper use in one country may be an improper use in another country. Consult your own legal counsel before using anyone else’s marks.

Trademarks and service marks are symbols that convey information to the public regarding the source, sponsorship, and/or affiliation of goods and services. Trademarks can be owned and legally protected against unauthorized use under a system of state, federal, and international laws. CFA Institute owns many marks that it uses throughout the world. CFA Institute has legal, enforceable rights in its marks. It has a policy for protecting those marks.

Everyone who uses CFA Institute marks must do so in strict compliance with the law and applicable contracts, codes, and standards.

  • CFA Institute does not permit its marks to be used in a way that is confusing, misleading, or disparaging.
  • Wherever they are used, each of the CFA Institute marks must be used with the appropriate symbol —  ® or ™ — after its first and in its most prominent use in each document. The symbol must appear in superscript and to the right of the mark.
  • In brochures and on websites, each time a mark is used in a heading, it must be used with the appropriate symbol.
  • On websites, each page is considered a separate document.
  • The marks cannot be altered or modified in any manner.
  • If the mark is a design, it cannot be combined with other elements or rearranged. Design logos should not be used without a license agreement.
  • Whenever a document (as defined above) includes a CFA Institute mark, the following notice must appear in bold, at the bottom, and in a font no smaller than 8 points: “(Specify CFA Institute mark(s) here) (is a or are) trademark(s) owned by CFA Institute.”
