Career Insights: Private Equity market in India

  1. Namit Arora, CFA
  2. Biharilal Deora, CFA, CIPM

The private equity and venture capital industry in India has evolved over the last two decades to establish itself as an important force in capital markets. In particular, it has witnessed robust growth in recent years, driven by capital needs of the economy, secondary PE opportunities and increasing activity across asset classes including VC and buyout transactions, special situations, structured credit etc.

Industry players in India now include most of the world’s leading PE and VC funds and several successful Indian funds with established track record. In addition, several Sovereign Wealth Funds (“SWFs”), foreign pension funds and a host of other players such as Alternative Investment Funds (“AIFs”), venture and distressed funds invest in this space.

PE funds are typically staffed with analysts, associates/senior associates, vice presidents/principals and MDs/partners. As the industry in India matures, PE funds will grow in size and complexity. This will create more career opportunities for finance professionals. In addition, several funds have operating professionals with industry / domain expertise that offers interesting opportunities for CFA charterholders working in various segments of the industry.
