Career Insights: Structured Finance

  1. Ashwin Narang, CFA
  2. Shreenivas Kunte, CFA, CIPM

Structured Finance is rapidly becoming a compelling source of capital for mid-market Indian companies for growth and special situations. Indian capital markets, so far, have been sharply divided in two broad buckets i.e equity and debt. In the last few years over 15-20 large institutions have created substantial pools of mezzanine capital which combines the features of both debt and equity. The estimated pool of capital formation is close to $5b. This is creating interesting career opportunities for finance professionals. Investment professionals in structured finance funds will need to look at the opportunity from both, a debt as well as an equity perspective. A typical team will comprise of individuals from a) corporate credit background - for understanding the cash flow and risk analysis of the issuer; from b) private equity - towards factoring the equity case and c) a coverage angle – for tracking sectors under focus, managing issuer relationships and project managing transactions.
