Career Insights: Academia

  1. Monika Chopra, CFA
  2. Biharilal Deora, CFA, CIPM

A career in academics is self-fulfilling and a continuous learning pursuit. Being in academics gives one the freedom to spend time on the projects that attract one the most. It creates an opportunity to mentor students, work on what truly interests you, pursue your passion in research, and be your own administrative boss. Recently, the number of institutes offering management education and the number of industry professionals thinking about joining academics have grown significantly. These professionals, however, are not clear on the path to be chosen to enter this field. Although a CFA degree adds value in terms of enhancing knowledge, it also requires skills in research, the pursuit of continuous learning, and development of new course areas to keep up with industry trends. How does one make a career in academics? How do universities and institutes source talent and what attributes do they look for? What are the roles and responsibilities of an academician?
