Maria Hartwig is an associate professor in the department of psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York. She has published surveys on beliefs about behavioral indicators of deception and published her research on interview and interrogation techniques and veracity assessments. Professor Hartwig has also extensively trained a variety of legal professionals, including prosecutors, judges, and detectives. She is an editorial board member of Law and Human Behavior, the leading scientific journal in the field of psychology and law, and an associate editor of the official newsletter of the American Psychology–Law Society. Professor Hartwig received an Early Career Award from the European Association for Psychology and Law for her contributions to psycho-legal research and the Saleem Shah Award for Early Career Excellence in Psychology and Law from the American Psychology–Law Society and the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. She holds a BS and PhD from the University of Gothenburg, where she conducted empirical research on social perception and judgment in legal settings.
