The foundation we built with CFA Institute quickly expanded to encompass valuable resources on investment trends and market updates, helping CCB (Asia) integrate cutting-edge knowledge into employee training.
Turning knowledge into practice
At CCB (Asia), formal learning is complemented by hands-on exposure and cross-functional collaboration so employees can apply new knowledge to real business challenges. This approach is especially important in sustainability and climate risk, where regulation, data availability, and operating models continue to evolve.
Grace Choi, Head of Risk Management Division at CCB (Asia), notes that professional qualifications help establish a shared technical foundation across teams, while practical experience enables employees to translate knowledge into better decision-making, clearer communication, and more effective risk management — strengthening both individual capability and organizational resilience.
Integrating climate risk into the risk framework
Climate-related risk measurement and monitoring now form an integral part of CCB (Asia)’s risk control framework. To support this shift, the Bank places strong emphasis on sustainability-focused professional qualifications that equip teams with specialized skills to identify, assess, and manage emerging risks.
For the risk function, this has resulted in stronger analytical capability and a more forward-looking perspective. Qualified professionals are better positioned to interpret evolving regulatory guidance, track policy developments, and respond with agility. This supports practical outcomes across framework design, risk assessment, reporting, and disclosure.
Global standards with local relevance
The CFA Program is widely recognized for building expertise in investment analysis and portfolio management. For CCB (Asia), the CFA Institute Sustainable Investing Certificate offers an additional advantage: global recognition combined with local relevance under the HKMA Enhanced Competency Framework (ECF) for green and sustainable finance.
CFA Institute also hosted dedicated sessions to demystify how these qualifications interconnect with the HKMA ecosystem and the Bank's internal accreditation pathways.
Professional qualifications provide a strong foundation in knowledge and skills, but they must be reinforced through hands-on experience, CPD, and collaboration to build truly resilient careers.
Developing the next generation of professionals
Professional qualifications also play a key role in preparing the next generation of financial professionals. Structured learning in climate science, risk quantification, and sustainable finance principles helps emerging talent build capabilities that are increasingly relevant across the financial sector.
Beyond technical knowledge, these programs reinforce ethical decision-making, adaptability, and lifelong learning through CPD. At CCB (Asia), qualified employees also mentor junior colleagues and deliver internal training, helping to embed a more proactive and resilient risk culture.
Choi further notes,
"Professional qualifications serve as a foundational bridge for emerging financial professionals, offering structured learning on climate science, risk quantification, and sustainable finance principles."
Capacity building through strategic partnerships
Professional development is closely aligned with CCB (Asia)’s broader capacity-building strategy. Jacqueline Ng, Assistant Division Head of Human Resources Division at CCB (Asia), explains that the Bank actively encourages employees to pursue designated professional qualifications and recognizes achievements through its Professional Qualification Award Scheme, which includes study support and financial incentives.
With a shared objective of strengthening professional standards and building a future-ready workforce, CCB (Asia) became the first Chinese bank to partner with CFA Institute in Hong Kong. The collaboration began with corporate program discounts and networking opportunities, and has expanded to include access to insights on investment trends and market developments.
Building confidence and capability
As a fresh university graduate entering the Bank's Management Trainee program, Harry Li's rotation within the Climate Risk team was a pivotal moment in his professional development. Attaining the Sustainable Investing Certificate during this rotation provided the "just-in-time" knowledge and technical fluency, rapidly bridged the experience gap with senior staff, transforming him from an observer into a proactive contributor to the Bank's strategic climate goals.
Said Harry,
"The qualification has boosted my risk management skillset, especially when navigating complex sustainability frameworks and stakeholder communications."
Supported by study leave and financial incentives, Li is motivated to continue his professional development, including pursuing further credentials such as the CFA Program.
Looking ahead
As the green transition accelerates, Grace Choi expects financial professionals to require stronger capabilities in climate data analytics, scenario analysis, transition planning, and regulatory interpretation. Alongside these technical skills, stakeholder engagement and communication will be increasingly important.
CCB (Asia)’s experience demonstrates that professional qualifications can play a meaningful role in building this capability when supported by practical application, internal recognition, and ongoing development. Through its partnership with CFA Institute, the Bank has strengthened sustainable finance expertise, supported employee growth, and enhanced organizational resilience—offering a practical model for institutions facing similar regulatory and market pressures.
