For the first time in the Middle East, CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals, announces Saud Al Fadhli and Mark T. Townsend as the winners of its inaugural Middle East Financial Journalism Awards.

Launched this year at the annual CFA Institute Middle East Investment Conferencein Kuwait, the awards programme seeks to recognise the contributions of journalists towards the advancement of investor education and professionalism in the financial sector.

CFA Institute received 30 articles from journalists across English and Arabic publications in the GCC region. Mr. Al Fadhli and Mr. Townsend were selected based on an anonymous critique of submissions by a judging panel of CFA society members across four criteria: educational value, clarity, relevancy, evidence-based reporting. The winning journalists were selected because they demonstrated a strong commitment to journalism and to help educate the public at large on ethics, professionalism and sound investment practice.

Nitin Mehta, CFA, managing director of CFA Institute in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said: “In the past few years, we have witnessed the GCC media increasingly adopting an independent code of conduct, underlining their commitment to a responsible media that ensures credibility, accuracy and unbiased news content. This environment promotes the freedom of the press and places additional responsibility on journalists to abide by the Code of Ethics, which is the foundation of our work at CFA Institute.”

He added: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Saud and Mark on this prestigious recognition. The quality and depth of their articles reflects an exceptional standard of journalism. This is the first year of the Financial Journalism Awards in the region and we hope to build upon the launch of the awards programme year on year to ensure that excellent journalism is commended and supported.”

Mr. Al Fadhli and Mr. Townsend were awarded a commemorative certificate and offered a media scholarship to the Claritas Investment Certificate, a global self-study programme designed to provide a clear understanding of the investment industry and role and responsibilities within it.
